The Grundy Center girls overcame a sluggish first half and pulled away late to pick up a 46-33 home conference win over East Marshall last Friday night and sweep the season series with the Mustangs.

“I don’t know if we really ever got going, but we were able to make a few baskets on the tail end there,” Grundy Center coach Matt Lindeman said.

The Spartans (11-2) actually pounced right away, taking a 6-0 lead after a pair of Hailey Wallis buckets and holding a 12-5 advantage thanks to a Sarah Lindeman long ball, but they let the Mustangs (4-10) hang around and eventually tie the score in the second on two Melinda Puumala free throws. A Brooke Flater free throw and a Wallis jumper gave Grundy Center a 15-12 lead heading into the locker room, but the Spartans scored just three points in the second frame.
