Spartans, Cougars kick off football season Friday

GRUNDY CENTER — The 2013 high school football season kicks off in Grundy Center Friday with the renewal of an area rivalry. Grundy Center and AGWSR open against one another the week before most teams start for the fourth consecutive year.

Both teams return talent on both sides of the ball. The Spartans feature a returning starter at quarterback and a pair of former all-staters in the lineup while AGWSR returns a pair of quarterbacks with starting experience and four of five starters from an outstanding offensive line.

AGWSR comes into the season with hopes of earning its first playoff berth since 2005 after barely missing a spot last year. The Cougars feature one of the area's top rushing games, with four of their top six rushers back from a team that had six players rush for more than 200 yards.

Coach Skip Eckhardt's team worked from a variety of formations a year ago while putting power at the point of attack.
