Spartans firing back at competition, remain undefeated

PARKERSBURG – Lori Willis thinks the Grundy Center volleyball team is starting to get the message.

More importantly, the Spartans are adapting as challengers come from all corners to try and be the first to deal a loss to 2A's top-ranked team.

Grundy Center kept its undefeated record intact at the end of Saturday's Aplington-Parkersburg volleyball tournament, winning all five matches to improve to 14-0 on the season and adding a third tournament title to its resume.

The Spartans survived some early challenges, dispatching Denver and 4A No. 11 West Delaware in three sets and sweeping the rest of the competition – Nashua Plainfield, 2A No. 9 Wapsie Valley and Aplington-Parkersburg.

"Everyone's going to give them their best shot," Grundy Center volleyball coach Lori Willis said. "They want to take us down, and we have to be on our guard and prepared for it, but more importantly embrace it because they're making us better. … We have to get grittier and we showed amazing grit today. That makes us better."
