WAVERLY – The Grundy Center volleyball team worked their way into the final match at the Waverly-Shell Rock tournament on Saturday, and fell just short of the championship title in a 22-25, 20-25 loss to Mount Vernon.
“It was a tough tournament; there were a lot of good teams there,” Spartan head coach Darwin Sents said. “We had a really good run all day.”
Each team played in two three-team pools to determine bracket assignments later in the day. Grundy Center started out the day with a 21-10, 21-12 win over Crestwood, then fell to Class 3A No. 2 Mount Vernon in their first meeting 20-22, 18-21.
