Spartans rush past GMG

GARWIN — Three Grundy Center running backs topped 100 yards and quarterback Brock Rohler threw a pair of touchdown passes, leading the Spartans to a one-sided 47-10 victory over GMG in a key Class A, District 4 game Friday.
The winners of three straight games, GCHS improves to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in District 4. GMG falls to 3-2, 1-1.
“We walked into this and knew it was going to be a hostile environment, they had a big win over North Tama last week, and we knew on their homecoming it was going to be a big week of prep for us, and to come down here and get one from these guys in the fashion that we did, I’m really pleased with our kids.
The Spartans dominated on both sides of the ball, rolling up a season-high 619 yards of total offense including 476 yards on the ground, its highest total in at least seven years and possibly much longer.
“Something we wanted to focus on this week was being more physical,” Thoren said. “I think people sometimes assume that we’re a finesse type of team because we try to hit the perimeter so much and early on we really got after them up front and I was really proud of the kids.”
