Storm's Carter Kolthoff qualifies for state
HUXLEY – Carter Kolthoff will represent South Hardin-BCLUW wrestling at this week's state tournament after winning the 106-pound title at a district tournament at Ballard High School on Saturday.
Kolthoff pinned Woodward-Granger's Peyton Nixon in the second period to set up a match with Nevada's Drew Robinson for the title.
Kolthoff won a 6-3 decision to reach the state tournament as the first state qualifier since his older brother, Taylor, qualified in 2018 alongside heavyweight Ryne Fuller.
Robinson scored the first takedown in the first period, but Kolthoff was awarded a penalty point and scored on a reversal to take a 3-2 lead after the first period. Robinson evened the match at 3-3 by escaping out of bottom position with 10 seconds left in the second period.
Kolthoff chose bottom for the third period and after Robinson was warned for stalling, Kolthoff escaped and then added a takedown, riding out the final 30 seconds.
Kolthoff and Robinson both advanced to the state tournament. Kolthoff will wrestle Waukon's Jakob Regan (32-10) in the Class 2A session scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start on Thursday, Feb. 20 at the Wells FargoArena in Des Moines.
Storm teammates Lucas Gunderson and Aiden Farnsworth both finished fourth at 195 pounds and 220 pounds, respectively.
