Susan "Sue" Tapper

PARKERSBURG — Susan “Sue” Ann Tapper, 74, of Parkersburg, was born the daughter of Kenneth Wayne and Theola Geraldine (Lint) Scott on February 20, 1949, in Marion, Iowa. Sue graduated from Marion High School in 1967, then attended and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in Elementary Education. After graduation Sue taught school.

On June 2, 1973, Sue was united in marriage with Vernon Dale Tapper at the Reformed Church of Stout in Stout. After their marriage, the couple moved to their current farm. Sue was a homemaker and helped Vernon on the farm. She later worked as a paraeducator in the Dike Elementary Schools and retired after 20 years.

Sue was a very active member of the Reformed Church of Stout. She served as a youth group leader, church secretary and taught Sunday School and catechism. Sue was head of the food committee, helped with Vacation Bible School and sang in the church choir. She was also a 4-H leader. Sue enjoyed growing plants and flowers. She also enjoyed traveling to Minnesota for many fishing trips as well as their trip to Colorado. Sue liked watching game shows and NASCAR. Sue’s greatest joy was spending time with her family.

On Thursday, June 8, 2023, Sue died at Unity Point Health – Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Sue is preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Theola Scott.

Sue is survived by her husband of 50 years, Vernon of Parkersburg; two daughters, Lisa (Joel) Dodgen of Humboldt and Laura (Kyle) Holtman of Ankeny; four grandchildren, Otto and Imogene Dodgen and Dylan and Rhys Holtman; three brothers, Jim (Rita) Scott of Central City, Jerry (Jerilyn) Scott of Marion, and John (Deb) Scott of Marion; two brothers-in-law, Gary (Barbara) Tapper of Grinnell and Gaylen Tapper of Portland, Ore.

A memorial service was held June 13, 2023, at the Reformed Church of Stout. Pastor Dawson Ackerman officiated the service. Accompanists were Elaine Schnell and Darlys Wiese and they accompanied the congregation as they sang “Blessed Assurance” and “In The Garden.” “How Great Thou Art” was sung by Leah Fairchild and “We’ve Only Just Begun” by The Carpenters was played. The burial was held at the Reformed Church of Stout Cemetery in Stout, with Sue’s grandchildren, Otto Dodgen, Imogene Dodgen, Dylan Holtman and Rhys Holtman serving as Honorary Casketbearers.

Visitation was held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday at the Redman Funeral & Cremation Services – Parkersburg Funeral Home in Parkersburg. Memorials may be directed to the family. Online condolences may be left at www.redmanfuneral.com.
