A team of their own: Community members, students make a case for GC wrestling program
It’s been over 20 years since Grundy Center has had their own wrestling program, but student wrestlers, parents and community members are hoping for a Spartan wrestling revival.
During Wednesday night’s Grundy Center School Board meeting, community members, students and coaches packed into the board’s meeting room to convince the board that Grundy Center is ready to start its own, independent wrestling program.
Currently, the school has a shared program with Aplington-Parkersburg that renews each year, but both co-coaches - Colby Grothoff of GC and Brian Benning of A-P - spoke in favor of a solo Spartan wrestling team.
“Our numbers have been growing, and we’ve been more than doubling the number of students in the program the last few years,” Grothoff said. “We have enough kids for our own program, and our youth program is really strong, too. We want to give these kids a chance to represent their own school and wear the Spartan singlet.”
