Thoren stepping down as Spartans football coach

Brent Thoren loves coaching.

It's something he's poured himself into; the first one at practice, the last to leave.

He's gone to plenty of football clinics as well to hone his craft, but one thing he hears from coaches brings him pause.

"So many coaches talk about how they don't have enough time for their kids and family," Thoren said. "I decided that I'm not going to be that person."

Thoren announced on Twitter last Wednesday that he would be stepping down as Grundy Center football coach, a move expected to be made official at next month's regular school board meeting.

Just to make everyone aware, I have decided to resign my position as head football coach. This was not an easy decision but one that is best for my family and my personal health. I love coaching, but need to step back from everything else that goes with it. Coach Thoren

His record with the Spartans over seven seasons was 34-32, including two playoff victories and five seasons above a .500 winning percentage.

He said it's hard to walk away from Grundy Center as last year's team featured a mix of strong senior leadership and talented underclassmen, finishing 5-4 in a brutally-tough district, but poised to make a transition for 2019.

"I'm ready for somebody else to take it to another level," Thoren said. "This program is primed to go to another level, I'm excited for whoever takes over and will continue to support that person and the players."
