Three earn NICL mat titles

CONRAD – The end of the 2013-14 wrestling season is not a fond memory for Dike-New Harford senior Tommy Irvin. 2014-15 appears to be better.
A year after illness led to tough losses and watching teammates at the state tournament, Irvin began the 2014-15 postseason in style Saturday, winning the 285-pound title at the North Iowa Cedar League tournament in Conrad.
“He’s just been steady all year long,” Dike-New Hartford coach Tony Norton said of his senior leader. “He continues to show a lot of improvement from last March to this November as far as wrestling. He does things the right way as a leader, so it’s good to see him win a conference championship.”
Irvin was one of three local champions in the event, though the only first-time winner. AGWSR senior Clay Meinders scored his third NICL title with the championship at 220 pounds while Dike-New Hartford sophomore Trent Johnson won his second in as many tries, this year at 132. D-NH’s Kyle Dennis also made the finals on his way to second place at 195.
The Wolverines placed second in the team race, though 68 markers clear of the title.
