Timothy “Tim” Hommel

Timothy “Tim” Hommel, age 76, of Conrad, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025.
The family will greet the public on Friday, Jan. 31 at Oakwood Clubhouse, Conrad from 5 to 7 p.m.
(Roger) Timothy Hommel was born March 1948 in Syracuse, New York to Roger and Eleanor (Hague) Hommel. He grew up in Manlius, New York where he graduated from Pebble Hill High School. He furthered his education by obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree from Cornell University in 1970.
Deciding that his father’s life as an optician wasn’t for him, Tim began his dream of farming by purchasing a dairy farm in the Fingerlakes region of New York with his wife, Jane Hanning. Tim and Jane had two children, David and Penelope. In 1987, he was drawn to the exceptional farmland of Iowa, as he professed to “Being tired of picking rocks out of my fields.” Together they left New York and moved to Grundy County, where they purchased a farm, raising grain and hogs. He and Jane later divorced but remained close friends. At this time, Tim called Conrad his home.
Tim was a quiet member of the community. He served as a council member for the Village of Scipio, NY and on the Grundy County Farm Bureau Board. He was a member of the New York Dairy Association, Grundy County Pork Producers and Iowa Farm Bureau. In 2010, Tim was named an Iowa Master Pork Producer.
Two of Tim’s interests were flying and farming. Since being a pilot who farmed was not feasible, he happily became a farmer who flew. As a member of Flying Farmers of America, he combined his two passions by attending Fly-in Pancake Breakfasts after chores were done. Tim was very happy with his farm career and was proud that his love of farming was continued by his son.
Those left to remember and cherish his memory are Jane Hommel, his children, David (Laura) Hommel and Penelope (Brian) Strack; grandchildren, Ella Hommel, Andrew Hommel, Daniel Hommel and Vivian Strack; and his siblings, Priscilla (Robert) Hoag and Nancy (Rick) Luzer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Eleanor Hommel.
Per Tim’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. For additional information or to send a condolence to the family please visit www.mitchellfh.com or call 641-844-1234.
