Two more teams selected for Grundy Sports Hall of Fame
The Grundy Center Sports Hall of Fame announced the election of two additional teams to the Class of 2023 inductees with the back-to-back state champion football teams of 1987 and 1988.
The 1987 Spartans won the second-ever state football championship in school history with a record of 11-1. Coached by Chuck Bredlow, the team pulled out a 7-6 overtime win in the semi-finals over Center Point and then defeated Britt for the Class 1A title by a score of 19-7 while only giving up 13 points in their 4 four playoff games.
The Spartans gridiron team followed up in 1988 with an undefeated season under Coach Bredlow of 12-0 capped off with a 20-7 win over Pekin in their season finale at the UNI Dome and only gave up 14 points in their four games in the state playoffs.
These teams, the 1943 and 1944 football teams and the 1963 boys basketball team join the recently announced individual honorees Ryan Ross, Erika Amfahr, and Dylan Hendricks in the Class of 2023. They will be officially recognized during the Hall of Fame’s annual induction ceremony at noon on Saturday, July 8 during Felix Grundy Festival activities.
Wall plaques commemorating the Class of 2023 will also be added at the high school “Wall of Fame” alongside individual inductees and teams previously elected.
The Grundy Center Sports Hall of Fame was organized in 2004 by local athletic boosters. Its purpose is to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of athletes, coaches, administrators and contributors who have been involved in or supported the athletic programs of the community. Nominations for the Hall of Fame are welcome from the public and can be made through members of the committee.
