A walking school bus: GC Elementary students join Safe Routes to School program

A new program in Grundy Center is aiming to improve the health and safety of local youngsters, as it promotes walking to school while also teaching kids how to be safe as a pedestrian.

The program, called Safe Routes to School (SRTS), is a nationwide initiative that partners with schools to create a “walking school bus.” The “walking school bus” has a route that picks students up as close to home as possible, and then takes them to school.

The program here in Grundy Center is just kicking off, and is being organized INRCOG through its Safe Routes to School Coordinator, along with the local Wellness Committee and elementary school.

Jacki Schares, who is INRCOG’s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Coordinator, says the program has really taken off around the state, and that they’re hoping to expand it here in Grundy Center.
