Wendell Willis Giesking

REINBECK - Wendell Willis Giesking, 85, of Reinbeck, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2024.

A funeral service to honor his life will be held on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Reinbeck, with Rev. Joel Love officiating. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 21st from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Abels Funeral and Cremation Service, French-Hand Chapel, in Reinbeck. Burial will follow the service at the Grant Township Cemetery.

Wendell was born on July 1, 1939, on a farm south of Ackley in Hardin County, the son of Carl and Katie (Geiken) Giesking. He began his education in 1944 in Colfax No. 3 country school. Later, his family moved to Parkersburg, where he graduated from Parkersburg High School with the class of 1957. On Aug. 20, 1961, Wendell was united in marriage to Phyllis Walton at the Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook. The couple made their home in the Grundy Center area until 1966, when they settled in Reinbeck and welcomed two children into their family.

Wendell was a dedicated farmer south of Reinbeck for over six decades. From 1985 until 2000, he also served as host at the Skyway Supper Club in Reinbeck.

Wendell was a long-time member of the Union Congregational United Church of Christ. He and Phyllis were actively involved in their community, serving as past presidents of the UCC Happy Hour Club and Circle R’s Square Dance Club. Wendell also held several leadership positions within the Lions Club, where he contributed his time and talents for 50 years. Additionally, he served as president and board member of the Grundy Mutual Insurance Company for many years.

Wendell found joy in life’s simple pleasures, from golfing and gardening to watching birds and flowers from his front door. He treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren and relished the opportunity to farm alongside his grandsons. To escape the harsh Iowa winters, he enjoyed spending time in Arizona. Wendell found great peace by his pond, whether fishing, enjoying a bonfire with friends and family, or spending time with his beloved puppy, Toby.

Wendell is survived by his children: Tami Armijo of Gilbert, Arizone and David (Kristy) Giesking of Reinbeck: his seven grandchildren, Keagan, Logan, Wyatt and Owen Giesking of Reinbeck and Alexander, Devin and Madelyn Armijo of Gilbert. He is also survived by his siblings; Clarene Schipper of Ackley, Harriet Schares of Denver, LeAnn Espe of Decorah and Clifford Giesking (Carolyn) of Albion.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, his parents and three brothers-in-law: John Schipper, Lloyd Schares and Roger Espe.

Wendell’s legacy of love, hard work, and dedication will be remembered by all who knew him. He never met a stranger and spoke to everyone he encountered, always sharing a warm smile. His genuine kindness and friendly nature left a lasting impression on everyone he met."
