What’s all that crowing about?

GRUNDY CENTER — The sound emanating from the chicken barn at the Iowa State Fairgrounds was more than your normal wake-up call earlier this summer. It was the sound of one of the many novelty contests at the State Fair — one that a Grundy Center family has become a regular at.
Earlier this summer Kay Schmidt picked up her fourth State Fair Rooster Crowing Contest title, defeating a strong group of competitors.
“You just pick a rooster that you think crows quite a bit, and then at 10 o’clock they call you and everybody puts them in their cage in front, and then when he says crow you try to get that bird to crow,” Schmidt said.
