William 'Bill' Leon Sloan

William “Bill” Leon Sloan, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2024. A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, February 5th, from 10:00 a.m. until time of memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at the Cornerstone Methodist Church of Grundy Center on Monday, February 5th  Burial will follow in Troy Iowa Cemetery upon the passing of his wife Sandra. Bill was born on June 22, 1934, in Davis County, Iowa to Delpha Archer Sloan and W. Ernest Sloan. He was raised in Drakesville and Floris, Iowa with his two sisters. He graduated from Troy High School as Salutatorian. He attended Iowa State University, graduating with a degree in Animal Science in 1955 Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.

  Bill married Sandra Garrett in Troy on August 30, 1953. They were blessed to be married for 70 years and raised 3 daughters. Bill spent 2 years in the army after graduation stationed in Karlsruhe, Germany. He was a radio operator with dot dash morse code.  Upon his return to the states, he moved to Denison, Iowa and showed championship Polled Hereford Cattle. He then purchased a farm near Floris, which he operated for several years receiving local and regional awards for his conservation leadership in strip farming. ln the early 70’s he took a position at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa teaching Agricultural Science. In 1979 Bill moved his family to Grundy Center, Iowa finishing his career with 22 years as a Farm Consultant with Cedar Valley Farm Business. 

  Bill enjoyed cheering on both his Iowa State Cyclones and the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved traveling throughout his life, spending time with family, reading and playing cards. Bill was proceeded in death by his parents, his sister Doris Jackson, and his eldest daughter Sherry Goetzl. He is survived by his wife Sandra, sister Carol Hersey, and daughters Lisa (Robert) Simmons and Debra (Henry) Gil. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Ryan (Nicole) Goetzl, Chelsey (Joe) Shimanek, Serena (Bryce) Peterson and Jude Sayre; as well as a great grandson Oliver Shimanek and a great granddaughter Kori Goetzl. He will be deeply missed by all.
