Wolverines score historic state title

MARSHALLTOWN — For nearly three decades, Dike-New Hartford girls’ sports headlines have been dominated by volleyball success. Monday and Tuesday the Wolverine girls’ golf team put its mark in the record books.
The Wolverines dominated the Class 2A State Golf Tournament at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown, becoming the first girls’ sport at the school other than volleyball to win a state title since Dike and New Hartford consolidated.
“I’m really proud of everyone. We did it,” senior Ashley Dumler said.
“We knew we had some good teams coming here and we knew we had to play our best golf and I think everyone did,” she said. “Everyone did awesome.”
“Our girls work hard and they’re a tight group,” D-NH coach Mike Soppe said. “When people didn’t play well (Monday), others picked them up. It was kind of vice-versa today, we just had everyone pick each other up over the two days – it was amazing.”
The Wolverines practically clinched their first-ever state golf title Monday by racing to a 26-shot lead, making Tuesday’s round seem like a victory lap.
