ACKLEY – Prairie Valley held AGWSR to less than 100 yards of total offense, ending the Cougars’ hopes of an undefeated regular season with a 26-8 victory at Ackley Friday.
Prairie’s victory creates a three-way tie for the Class A, District 2 championship among Bishop Garrigan, the Warriors and AGWSR. Garrigan received the district’s top seed into the playoffs based on tiebreaking procedures while the Cougars received the second seed and Prairie Valley the third.
“We’re still tied for district champs — a three-way tie — it’s not like we’re not district champs with the rest of them,” Cougar coach Skip Eckhardt said. “Two years ago we (won one game).”
AGWSR will host Lawton-Bronson in the first round of playoffs Wednesday at 7 p.m. A win would likely send the Cougars to Inwood for a second-round matchup with top-ranked West Lyon.
Prairie Valley held an injury-plagued Cougar team to 94 yards of total offense and just five first downs in the game. The Cougars rushed for just 60 yards and completed just 3-of-21 pass attempts.
“They just whooped us,” AGWSR coach Skip Eckhardt said, refusing to blame a series of injuries that decimated the team’s depth for the loss. “We got back in the game and then they went down the other way. We were just out of whack.
