AMES — John Crew and Kadi Wright earned earned individual state cross country meet berths last Thursday, leading Dike-New Hartford in the Class 2A regional meet at Iowa State University in Ames.
Crew placed third in a meet where the top 10 individuals and top three teams earn state bids while Wright was seventh. Both will be running at state for the second straight year. Crew said finding a pace on the unfamiliar Iowa State course against a lot of teams the Wolverines don’t see in the regular season was difficult.
“I was pretty alone at the beginning,” he said.
Wright, too, said she felt she ran a good race.
“It was hard to push myself in the middle of the race when people kept trying to pass me,” she said.
Wright said she had a strong start on one of the course’s fastest, widest areas.
“I got out strong and in front of the pack; that was important,” she said.
