One year later, Grundy Center man to complete NY dream

GRUNDY CENTER – One of the more visible victims of Hurricane Sandy one year ago was the first-ever cancellation of the New York City Marathon. Thousands of runners who had worked weeks upon weeks to prepare for the run through New York’s boroughs suddenly found themselves with nowhere to run.
    One among those thousands was Grundy Center’s Larry Cole, who had planned a family vacation around his participation in the event.
    “It was just … semi-frustrating, really,” he said. “You do 20 weeks of training for the run and then Mother Nature comes in and cancels flights. I think there were like 100 people that got killed when the hurricane came through; it was pretty tragic.”
    Unlike some planned participants, Cole and his family cancelled their travel plans the Wednesday before the marathon, two days before the race’s cancellation and two days after the storm hit.
