Bond elections selected Register’s top stories

There was no lack of intriguing news in Grundy County in 2013. From contested elections to a controversial power corridor that outraged many local land owners to a pair of unexpected high-profile resignations, the year was interesting indeed.
The year’s top story was selected because of its wide-reaching impact on a pair of Grundy County communities. Both Grundy Center and AGWSR hoped that voters would support their bids to build. AGWSR voters said yes to a measure that will also lead to the closure of the elementary building in Ackley while Grundy Center voters were not interested in the district’s proposal to expand its elementary school and build both a new band room and gymnasium at the high school.
The top stories were selected by Grundy Register editor John Jensen, who covered and wrote about each and every one of them.
No. 1 — Grundy Center, AGWSR school bond issues see mixed results — Voters in a pair of local school districts had vastly different answers to bond issues floated before them in 2013.
While AGWSR voters overwhelmingly said ‘Yes’ to an issue that is allowing the distict to build an addition onto its current high school in Ackley for elementary students from the northern half of the district and renovate the Wellsburg attendance center to accommodate lower elementary students, Grundy Center votes resoundingly defeated an issue that would have allowed construction at both the elementary and secondary buildings.
