Spartan girls fall in regular season finale

GRUNDY CENTER – The Grundy Center girls’ basketball team closed out the regular season with a pair of losses, falling to Columbus 43-37 at home in their final regular season game last Tuesday, after dropping a game to Class 2A No. 8 Dike-New Hartford at Dike on Monday, 76-35.
The 11-10 Spartans played BCLUW in the first round of the Class 2A Region 2 postseason bracket on Saturday.

The Spartans struggled to find the net Tuesday, allowing Columbus to move ahead early in an evenly matched NICL crossover game at Grundy Center Tuesday night. Down 26-18 at the half, the Spartans defense stayed strong, but the offense couldn’t find the spark they needed to make a comeback, and the Sailors took the win by a six point margin.
“We never really got comfortable offensively and our poor shooting from the field showed,” Grundy Center head coach Matt Lindeman said. “They seemed to be one step ahead of us when we were on defense, and we didn’t anticipate and react fast enough. We still had opportunities in the second half but couldn’t put anything together to make a solid run.”
