Strong start lifts Cougars past Spartans in districts

ACKLEY – There were no secrets when the AGWSR and Grundy Center boys’ basketball teams took the court in a Class 1A District 4 quarterfinal Saturday. The NICL-West foes split their regular season conference games with each claiming a win on their home court, most recently a 73-71 overtime win by the Cougars. On Saturday it was more than just the home court advantage that gave AGWSR the tie-breaking win and the right to continue down the tournament trail, as the Cougars downed Grundy Center with a big 57-38 win.
The Cougars started strong, leading 12-5 by the end of the first period and 27-15 at the half.
“AGWSR really pounded us on the boards early on, and we had a two minute stretch where we made poor decisions offensively that allowed them to get an 8-10 point lead,” Grundy Center head coach Rollie Ackerman said.
