Council asks, ‘Why all the amendments?’

GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center City Council members want to know why the city relies so heavily in budget amendments as the end of the fiscal year nears.
The question came up Monday as the Council heard a presentation on proposed amendments and set a public hearing for May 5 to discuss them. City Clerk Kristy Sawyer said are needed because of income from Sara Lee Yoder grants and FEMA funds as well as additional expected expenditures from the police department, library, ambulance and other areas.
Councilman Dave Stefl wondered aloud why the city needs budget amendments each year.
“I realize that the city is a dynamic thing, but I just wish there wasn’t this constant yo-yo,” he said. “We have done this for years where we approve a budget and then six months later pass an amendment to it.
“I am concerned about the vision shown by the department heads,” he added.
