Spartans return to State Golf Meet

OSKALOOSA – Grundy Center boys' golf coach Dennis Dirks has said all season that he felt his team had the potential to do something special this year. Thursday the Spartans took a major step toward doing just that, besting a talent-laden field to earn the district championship at Oskaloosa.
Dirks credited the Spartans' championship to preparation, noting that the team had played the previously-unfamiliar Oskaloosa Golf Course several times since learning it would be the site for districts.
“We've had the 22nd of May circled on the calendar for three months,” Dirks said.
“The ultimate goal is to play the last day of the season (in the state tournament). You can't play in the state tournament if you don't play well in districts.
“For that course in those conditions, I thought we played well,” he said.
