Board approves increased supply expenditure
GRUNDY CENTER — The cost of teaching is on the increase in Grundy Center and throughout Iowa. Last Wednesday the Grundy Center Community School District’s Board of Directors approved a nearly $18,000 increase in expenditures for instructional supplies.
The increase is due to Iowa Core requirements, according to Superintendent Cassi Murra. This year’s orders total $59,476 according to a request from Secondary and Elementary Principals Ann Lebo and Lisa Miller, an increase from $42,000 last year.
“Teachers have needs for instructional materials that will enable them to teach the more rigorous concepts from the Iowa Core,” the request states.
The document also notes that initial requests were more than $80,000 and trimmed to the current level.
Miller told the Board to expect higher instructional supply costs for the next several years.
“I feel like this has to be done,” she said. “We have to put the right materials in our teachers hands to teach the Core.”
