Defense lifts Wolverines to season-opening victory

PARKERSBURG — Dike-New Hartford held Aplington-Parkersburg to 141 yards of total offense on its way to a 27-7 victory over the Falcons in the second-annual Channel Seeds Ag Bowl, which kicked off the Iowa high school football season last Thursday.
The victory is Dike-New Hartford’s fourth straight over its rival, including a playoff victory. The teams will not meet in the playoffs this season, as A-P has moved up to play in Class 2A while D-NH remains in Class 1A.
The Wolverines leaned heavily on their defense, holding the Falcons to 83 yards of total offense after its initial drive. Operating out of a spread formation instead of the wing-T it had run since the days of Coach Ed Thomas, A-P averaged just three yards per rush and threw for just 31 yards.
