Mom of the Year? GCFL team mom hopes so
GRUNDY CENTER — Somer Muller grew up watching football. She watched the Hawkeyes with her grandfather as she grew up, became an avid Green Bay Packers fan and met her husband as he played football at Upper Iowa University.
Now her role is much different … and much more important … as a team mom for the Grundy Center Football League team coached by her husband, Scott, and that her son, Kolby, plays on.
She is also one of 100 candidates nationwide to become USA Football’s 2014 Mom of the Year. Nominated by her husband, Somer is one of 10 finalists in Week Nine of the contest, with the winner receiving a $1,000 equipment credit to be used at a major sports equipment company.
Muller wears many hats as the team mom.
“I’m a huge supporter of the team,” she said. “I cheer the loudest, the boys definitely hear me, and I know the plays so I know what they’re doing. There’s some kids whose parents can’t make it because they work or have other things going on, so I make sure the boys feel special so they know someone’s out there cheering them on.
To vote for Somer, go online to usafootball.com, click on the team mom banner as it rotates across, then click on “Vote for Team Mom.” Click on Week 9 under Team Mom Nominees, where you will find Sommer’s picture and bio. You may vote once per day through Friday on any computer or mobile device.
