Council discusses Upper Elementary, future of local programs

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center City Council Monday had a chance to talk about the potential impact of the Grundy Center Community School District’s decision to close the aging Upper Elementary building which is located on Ninth Street.
School Board President Bob Johanns shared his personal views about the situation with the Council, describing the situation as “sunsetting” the building as of June 30. Johanns said a concern of his is the future of the Grundy Center Preschool and Childcare Center (GCPCC) and Grundy Family YMCA, both of which currently use the building extensively.
“What’s vitally important for me is what I can do to try to help and make sure that these entities stay in this community and stay viable,”
Johanns, who has lived in Grundy Center for 13 years, said having good daycare (including Bottles to Backpacks and Joyful Noise) play a role in what families with children who are considering moving to the community look at.
“We have to make it as convenient as possible for them to get good, dependable daycare,” he said while adding that a fitness facility such as the YMCA is vital in attracting and keeping people in the community.”
