Fair Board discusses expansion plans

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy County Fair has experienced a renaissance of sorts in recent years as increased entertainment and activities have led to increased attendance. Last week members of the County Fair Board discussed expansion plans at the Fairgrounds that include a campground, expanded Alumni Building and a major renovation of the horse arena.
“Our goal is to make the Grundy County Fair the best around,” Fair Board vice-president Rick Schmidt said. “We want people to be able to use the Fairgrounds year-round.”
The largest project planned is the expansion of the Alumni Building to eventually include a meeting room, handicap-accessible bathrooms and showers, Fair Board offices and a modern commercial kitchen. The first phase of the three-phase expansion includes lining the inside of the building with steel and air conditioning the facility.
“When you’re out at the county fair in July it’s always hot. There’s no place for people to go cool down. If there happens to be a little bit of a lag, they’re sitting there in the heat and if they leave they’re not going to come back,” Schmidt said.
