G-R patrons sound off on proposal to close elementary

REINBECK — Emotions ran high last Wednesday as the Gladbrook-Reinbeck Community School District held the second of two community meetings to answer questions and gather input on the future of its elementary schools in Gladbrook and Reinbeck.
Superintendent Shawn Holloway spoke first about the district’s financial position, noting that if nothing is done the district will likely exceed its state-set maximum spending authority within four years. He noted that district enrollment continues to go down, leading to decreased revenues.
“Our assumptions are negative,” he said. “If we push it out far enough it never comes out positive.”
