Season-best performances highlight state track and field meet
DES MOINES — Several season-best performances were not enough to lead area athletes to gold medals at the state track and field meet last week at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Area athletes turned in no fewer than 12 season bests and placed in the top eight in 13 events but failed to win an event for the first time in three years. Each area school that qualified athletes for the state meet scored this year, though only one came home in the top 10.
The closest call of the meet came in the Class 2A boys’ distance medley relay where Dike-New Hartford overcame a difficult second handoff to place second in a season-best 3 minutes, 31.44 seconds. Connor Neuroth, Brody Goos, Connor Blough and John Crew came up just 1.4 seconds behind winner Kingsley-Pierson/Woodbury Central.
“I’ve got to admit that guy’s a hell of a runner - it was hard to keep up with him,” Wolverine anchor runner John Crew said of KP-WC’s Nic Scheelhaase. “I tried to beat him but I just lost him on that last straightaway”
