Annex building may not require bonding

GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy County may not require a public vote on bonds to build its proposed annex building. That was the conclusion of Grundy County Auditor Rhonda Deters Tuesday after learning that the proposed building site along H Avenue south of the Grundy County Courthouse is in an urban renewal area.
The information came after the County Board of Supervisors Monday believed that they would need a public bond vote for a project with a cost that could exceed $900,000.
Deters said, because the proposed site is in an urban renewal area, the County would be able to gain approval to purchase bonds for the project with a reverse referendum rather than a traditional bond vote. Under the reverse referendum the County would give notice to the public of its intent to purchase the bonds. Members of the public would have a period of time to petition the county for a public vote. If no petition is filed the county could go ahead with the bond purchase.
