Newcomers lift Spartans at Marshalltown Early Bird

    MARSHALLTOWN – Three freshmen were among Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck's top four runners last Thursday as the Spartans opened the 2015 girls' cross country season with a second-place finish at the Marshalltown Early Bird meet at Marshalltown Community College.
    The Spartans finished with 73 points against a field comprised mostly of Class 4A and 3A teams. Urbandale, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A by the Iowa Track and Field Coaches Association, swept the top seven spots on its way to a victory with a perfect 15-point score. Waterloo West was third, 39 points behind GCGR while Marshalltown (116) and Webster City (118) rounded out the top five.
