Crocheting for a cause: Local nurse pays it forward with newborn hats

GRUNDY CENTER – After spending five long weeks in the Allen Hospital NICU when her twins were born 10 weeks early, Lacy Tripp started to think about ways she could brighten the day of someone else who was in the same position as she was.
The idea she came up with: baby hats.
Every newborn baby leaves the hospital with a tiny little hat. Usually, the hats aren’t too elaborate; light blue for the little boys and powder pink for the little girls.
“I thought it would be fun to make more vibrant and colorful hats,” Tripp said.
She recalled how when she was about 10-years-old, her grandmother tried to teach her how to crochet, although she never really picked up on it. A little over a year ago, Tripp, who is a registered nurse at Grundy County Memorial Hospital, had a patient whose wife would sit by his bed and crochet all day.
Tripp noticed her, and asked the woman to teach her how to crochet. It started off with basic knots, but soon enough, Tripp was crocheting hats and more with the best of them.
