Leadership jobs instill responsibility in BCLUW youngsters

We’ve all heard the old cliché: “Leaders aren’t born, they’re made.”
 
At BCLUW Elementary School, administrators and teachers are attempting to instill the principles of leadership in students at a young age, and the new Leadership Jobs program, introduced this year in conjunction with The Seven Habits, has got kids excited to step up, work with others and build skills that will serve them throughout their lives.
 
The concept is fairly simple: during each quarter of the school year, students in grades Pre K-4 fill out an application for various jobs that, if hired, they will be expected to perform outside of their regular classrooms throughout their tenure. These include positions like the Assembly Leadership Team, the Comet News team, the Building and Grounds Keeping team, the Interior Design group, Equipment Managers, Lunchroom Leaders, the Flag Officers and the Comet Cheerleaders, just to name a few. Elementary Principal Mitch Parker, who has made leadership skills a top priority for the 2015-2016 school year, has already seen the positive effects of the new program on his students.
 
“(The kids) have built a teamwork atmosphere, and they’re excited to basically do anything they can around here to make it a better place,” he said. “It’s a huge part of what we’re doing (with leadership).”
