Hospital unveils latest infection control technology
GRUNDY CENTER – Recently, the Grundy County Memorial Hospital became one of two rural hospitals in the state to implement an Ultraviolet Light Disinfection system, a state-of-the-art technology to improve infection control and patient safety.
“Our infection rate is already among the lowest in the country,” said surgery manager Jessica Eilers, RN BSN CNOR. “Since we’ve added the UV system, our Environmental Services team is using it daily in our operating rooms. It’s an additional level of protection against acquiring a hospital acquired infection while in our care.”
The system uses ultraviolet light to kill virtually any germ that the light touches, including C-diff and MRSA, which can survive on surfaces for up to five months and 12 months, respectively.
The portable system can be wheeled into a room, turned on remotely, and in about eight minutes, the room will be virtually germ-free.
