Minutemen gear up for second season

The Tri-County Minutemen—a high school American Legion team consisting of players from the South Hardin, Grundy Center and BCLUW districts—are ready for another season of baseball coming off of a 4-5-1 mark in their inaugural campaign.

The team experienced some growing pains in its first season as many contests came against much larger, established programs from places like Dubuque, Cedar Rapids and the Des Moines area. According to manager Dan Huntley, however, when he asked his players about the future following a 24-1 postseason loss to Dubuque County last April, they weren’t looking to back down from the challenge.

“Unanimously, they wanted more games against better opponents,” he said.

Key losses from last season’s team included ace pitcher Jordan Clapp, a 2014 Grundy Center graduate, BCLUW infielder and pitcher Mitch Miller, an all-NICL West selection last season, and South Hardin twin brothers Dave and Sam Shindelar, who played all over the field for the Minutemen.
