GRUNDY CENTER – The students of Ronda Sternhagen’s Fundamentals of Art class are putting their artistic skills to an applied use with their latest project: designing the exterior of the Grundy Center Police Department’s newest squad car.
Their canvas – a metallic grey 2016 Ford Police Interceptor.
Captain Kyle Waugh of the GCPD said that as soon as the department knew they would be purchasing a new vehicle, they started thinking of ways to make it more eye-catching than the current squad car.
“We wanted something that really reflects the community, so we thought ‘why not get the kids involved?’ We know they have a ton of talent,” Waugh said. “So it really became a community outreach.”
Late this February, the department teamed up with Sternhagen’s art students to put on a contest in which students would dream up a design that will grace the exterior of the newest squad car.
