Local law enforcement warns against leaving cars unlocked after rash of break-in's

GRUNDY CENTER - Between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, over 18 Grundy Center residents reported that their cars had been broken into; though in each case, the vehicle was left unlocked.
In some cases, items such as cash and baseball tickets were stolen, but in other cases, the vehicle was entered and ransacked but nothing was stolen.
Grundy Center Police Chief Doug Frost said there were several instances in which a car was entered, and there was an opportunity to steal an item such as a purse, billfold, laptop or other valuables, but nothing was taken.
”At this point were not quite sure what their motive is,” he said.
He also said he believes this rash of break-in’s is not isolated, and is most likely related to the incidents that have been occurring throughout the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area, as well as in Reinbeck and Dike over the last few days.
Due to the large area affected, he believes there is more than one person involved in the break-in’s.
In response to the situation, Frost stressed the need for people to not only lock their doors, but to remove any valuables from plain sight and take them inside before leaving the vehicle. He added that whenever possible, you should park in a well-lit area, and leave your windows completely closed.
