Supervisors approve election canvass

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors approved the canvass from last week’s election and discussed the process and issues voters faced during its regular meeting on Monday morning.

Three county supervisors—chairwoman Barb Smith, Jim Ross and Chuck Bakker—won re-election, and Ross was the only one who faced a challenge, from independent Dave Strickler. Auditor Rhonda Deters and Sheriff Rick Penning were also re-elected after running unopposed, and in all, 77.6 percent of the registered voters in Grundy County cast a ballot, a slight increase from 76.8 percent in 2012.

Voters arrived at the polls as early as 6:15 a.m. last Tuesday (they opened at 7:00), and there were only a few minor complaints. Exit pollers were present at the Wellsburg and Dike precincts and were required to stay outside, and one citizen reported a person arriving at the polls wearing a shirt advocating for a specific candidate. Deters noted that while voters are allowed to wear attire that shows support for a candidate while voting, they are not allowed to hang around the polls afterward and attempt to influence other voters.
