GCHS class of 2018 celebrates commencement

Sunday afternoon, family, friends and community members packed into the gymnasium to celebrate the graduation of Grundy Center High School’s Class of 2018.
           
The ceremony began with a welcome from the Class of 2018 President, Amber Laube, who gave a speech titled “Life’s About the Journey, Not the Destination.”
           
“Guys, it’s finally here. We’ve made it to the day of caps, gowns, and diplomas,” Laube said. “This past month has been long, as we all have been praying for graduation day to come, to be done with high school. We have reached our destination. As you all sit here today, take a minute to look back on the journey that has gotten you here. The moments leading up to this day have been exhausting, preparing and getting ready for graduation. Now that it’s finally here, it’s going to be over in the blink of an eye, and I want you all to remember that, as you savor this moment, and work towards your future destinations. The destination will never last long; it’s the journey that makes us who we are.”
 
“As we leave here, we’ll have many destinations: college, getting out of your parents basement, landing your dream job, buying that dog, then getting married and having the average 2.4 kids; upgrading from the dusty minivans to the fancy SUV’s,” she said. “All of these things are goals, among many others, that we will have to work for. But, as we’re striving to be accomplished, we can’t forget about how we got where we are and to notice what’s right in front of us. We can’t wish our lives away, because that means wishing away the journeys; the people, the mistakes, the lessons, the experiences, and the memories. So as you start on your way toward your new destinations throughout this wonderful gift of life, don’t forget to live the journey. Don’t forget Grundy Center High School. Don’t forget each other.”
