Competition sparse in local races

The further you get down the ballot, the less you’ve probably heard about the local candidates in the 2018 midterm election. And in Grundy County, at least, there’s a reason: of all of the countywide races, only the agricultural extension council is contested.
           
Heading into next Tuesday, seven names are in the running for five seats on the council: incumbents Janelle Koenigsfeld, Terry Johnston, Ryan Bakker and Joe Dier are seeking re-election, and Bill Noteboom, Julie Grunklee and Darwin Cannegieter are running to fill the seat left by Glenn Johnson, who is departing from his post.
           
Elsewhere, County Treasurer Brenda Noteboom, County Recorder Travis Case and County Attorney Erika Allen, all Republicans, are seeking re-election to their respective positions without a declared challenger. Republican Heidi Nederhoff is running unopposed to fill the District 2 vacancy on the board of supervisors (Holland/Wellsburg area) left by Harlyn Riekena’s retirement, and 15-year GOP incumbent Mark Schildroth is up for re-election in District 4 (Reinbeck area).
