INRCOG updates GC council on upper story housing project
Progress on a renovation that would add apartment units to the upper story of the former Frederick Furniture building at 703 G Ave. has been temporarily stalled due to preservation requirements by the state.
Back in May, the City of Grundy Center and a private developer - Matthew Bockes - were awarded a $500,000 grant as part of a unique Upper Story Housing pilot project funded through the IEDA (Iowa Economic Development Authority). Bockes’ plan is to add four apartments to the upper story of the building.
According to Brian Schoon, a representative of INRCOG that is working with the city and Bockes on the project, the project must meet certain historic preservation standards due to the age of the building, and federal money being involved.
One of the main obstacles is that in order to be up to code for fire and safety standards, the apartments must have egress windows.
