Dementia support group offers help to local caregivers, family members

Being a caregiver for a loved one with dementia or Alzheimer’s isn’t an easy job, but Home Care Assistance of the Cedar Valley aims to help by offering a free dementia support group for family members and caregivers of those with dementia or Alzheimer’s.
 
The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month in the back room of the Natural Grind coffee shop in Grundy Center at noon to talk, share and get advice and resources from each other.
 
Jessica Fairbanks, owner and client care manager of Home Care Assistance, and Sara Wegmann, employee care manager also of Home Care Assistance, run the group along with Kaylene Hoskins, director of Arlington Place in Grundy Center.
 
During the December meeting, over half a dozen support group members from all around the area took part in a Dementia Live simulation, which simulates what it’s like to live with dementia, Alzheimer’s or another cognitive impairment.
 
“The simulation is meant to give you a glimpse of what it’s like to live with dementia or another cognitive impairment and how your everyday life can be altered,” Fairbanks said.
