Grundy Center softball slams Rebels (PHOTOS)

GRUNDY CENTER – Spartan softball started the scoring early in an 11-1 win against Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Wednesday at the George Wilhelm Sports Complex.
  
After an 11-0 loss to East Marshall last Monday, Grundy Center was back at full strength after missing some members on the team that were playing in a soccer regional final with the Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck team.
  
Sydney Mathews had a hit and scored twice and Maddie McMartin added an RBI but having players like them back in the lineup was more about getting everyone in the right space defensively.
  
"We've got girls that played four or five games earlier this year and we'll need their experience down the road," Grundy Center coach Jeff Mathews said. "Having a girl like Maddie at short is huge for us and our lineup is just better having the soccer players here, it's a good first step."
  
The Spartans led 10-0 after three innings but the Rebels extended the game with a Reagan Skovgard RBI triple. Grundy Center eventually ended the game an inning later when Emma Beck scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.
  
G-R being able to extend the game was a product of playing better as the game went on.
  
"The first two innings were very slow but they competed those last four innings, and I'm hoping we can carry that into the next week of games," G-R coach Collin Arndt said. "This is the second game with all our girls together and our third game of the year, so right away we're a work in progress but there's no time to sit on our heels."
