Dike-New Hartford baseball stumbles defensively in district final

DIKE – In recent seasons, defense has been a cornerstone of Dike-New Hartford baseball.

While D-NH head coach Sean Leonard did not write off Saturday's district final with Roland-Story as a gimme for the third-ranked Wolverines, he admits he did not foresee defensive issues being D-NH's downfall.

Alas, the Norsemen collected four unearned runs in the early stages of the district championship in Dike and the Wolverines didn't get enough hits to drop in response, bringing D-NH's season to an end in a 7-5 Roland-Story victory.

"We haven't looked like that defensively all season, and maybe since the beginning of last season," Leonard said. "It's a funny game, sometimes. We didn't make enough plays tonight and that's a tough pill to swallow."
