GRUNDY CENTER – Union volleyball vanquished Dike-New Hartford in a back-and-forth, five-set rumble in the Class 3A Region 4 Championship, played out to a capacity crowd at Grundy Center High School on Monday, Nov. 4.
The Knights triumphed 25-22, 20-25, 25-15, 21-25, 15-11 to improve to 30-11 on the season and return to state for the first time since 2016, when D-NH defeated Union for the 3A state title. The Wolverines' season ends at 29-15, missing state for the first time since 2006, a streak of 12 consecutive appearances that included six state titles.
Union plays Davenport Assumption in a 3A state quarterfinal at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
"We stayed aggressive and we kept believing and fighting," D-NH head coach Diane Harms said. "We gave ourselves a shot in each set, but Union never gave up and it was back and forth, back and forth, and they just made more plays at the critical times than we did tonight."
