Monday's basketball: Comets split with Plainsmen

Girls

BCLUW 45, BELLE PLAINE 34: Chloe Walters scored 23 points in the BCLUW girls basketball team's 45-34 victory at Belle Plaine High School on Dec. 9.

After getting out to a 16-6 start after the first quarter, BCLUW's lead shrunk to 29-26 at the end of three quarters before the Comets put in enough buckets to break a two-game skid, improving to 3-2 overall.

The teams combined for 58 turnovers. Walters added six rebounds. Madison Ubben came off the bench for four points and seven rebounds and Lizzie Garber and Allison Engle added six points each.

Alyssa Tegeler led Belle Plaine (2-3) with 16 points.

BGM 54, GLADBROOK-REINBECK 49: BGM rallied for a 54-49 victory over Gladbrook-Reinbeck at G-R High School on Dec. 9.

The Rebels trailed 25-21 at halftime but pushed to a 37-31 after three quarters. In the final frame, the Bears (3-2) put up 23 points to leave Reinbeck with the win.

Mahayla Olson led the Rebels (0-4) with 16 points, Saari Kuehl added 12 points, 13 rebounds and five assists and Megan Cooley scored four points with 11 rebounds and eight blocks.

Twenty turnovers and 14-of-29 shooting from the free-throw line hampered G-R's ability to put the game away.

Rachel Hawkins led BGM with 16 points.

Boys

BELLE PLAINE 59, BCLUW 53: BCLUW boys basketball couldn't maintain an early lead in a 59-53 loss at Belle Plaine on Monday, Dec. 9.

The Comets led 21-5 after the first quarter and was up 38-25 at halftime, but the Plainsmen outscored BCLUW 29-15 after halftime to come out on top.

BCLUW outrebounded Belle Plaine 43-28, but the Plainsmen (4-2) hit 17-of-31 free-throws, paired with 40.4 percent shooting from the floor to hang on for the victory.

Mason Yantis led the Comets with 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting, adding 10 rebounds. Treye Teske contributed 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Noah Gallentine had a team-leading five steals.

Luke DeMeulenaere scored 21 points to lead the Plainsmen.
