Saturday's basketball roundup: Comets rout Redhawks for Janssen's 1st win
Boys
BCLUW 65, NORTH TAMA 30: Evan Janssen is still wanting that first NICL West victory.
But he can't deny that it felt good to get in the win column as a coach, with the Comets locking down North Tama in a 65-30 victory at BCLUW High School on Saturday for the first-year head coach's first career win.
"You gotta get that first win," Janssen said. "It's just like getting that first basket in a game, everything feels good right after that. That's big for the kids."
Jesse Moore scored 13 points to lead the Comets, one of three in double figures along with Treye Teske (11 points) and Mason Yantis (10).
Janssen pointed to the team's defensive pressure and rebounding as keys to the weekend victory.
"We try to emphasize our strengths and we were applying that press well instead of just waiting for the half-court," Janssen said. "One of the things we harped on with the guys, though, was that this … can't be the high point of our season. We go in with the expectation of competing our butts off, but we celebrate the wins that are competitive."
